A Silver and Gold Table Setting Gets Playful!
It’s rose season in the PNW so I’m going to use some of the roses from my garden to brighten up a silver and gold table setting.
One thing I’ve threatened to do for a long time is to set several tables with EXACTLY the same place settings. The only thing that would change would be the centerpiece and candles. And now I’ve done it!
This table is the first. I also did two others with more of the roses I got from my garden last weekend. So keep your eyes peeled in the coming weeks! Three tables – same place settings – different looks!
The Table Linens
First things first – the tablecloth. I used this lovely square linen one that doesn’t quite fit the table. But I actually wanted it that way, so I could leave some wood showing. I think that gives the whole table a less formal look.
While I was having so much fun with the roses, I completely forgot about the napkins! (“Not possible!” you exclaim! But unfortunately, it was!) However, since we’ll have three tables with this configuration, we can make it a game to imagine what different napkin placements might look like! ANYway …
A Silver & Gold Table Setting
This is a classic white, silver, and gold place setting. Perfectly lovely and neutral on its own, and it’s easy to dress it up, down, or different.
I have some basic silver chargers, but I’ve always wanted some fancier ones – and I finally found some! I’m so happy with these. They’re the usual hard melamine – very sturdy, but lightweight and inexpensive. Plus, beautiful!
On top of the silver charger, I used a scalloped, gold-edged dinner plate, and a gold accented salad plate. For a cool toned table, I like to go a little heavier on the silver, and use the gold as an accent. If you want a warmer feeling, you could use gold as the main color and use silver as the accent.
The flatware is my Wallace Rose Point that I’ve been collecting all my life. I loved the pattern when I got my first pieces at 15 years old, and I still love it now! For all its delicacy, it’s a solid pattern that ups the silver quotient of our silver and gold table setting.
Pink Garden Roses Make It Bright And Playful!
For this fun and springy look, I used two pink rose varieties. The darker one is Gertrude Jekyll, a super-fragrant David Austin rose. It grows on the west side of our house like it’s going to take over the world!
The lighter pink one is called Pearly Gates. It’s a gorgeous climber, and Gertrude’s active partner in world domination! It’s got a beautiful spicy rose scent and almost no thorns.
I would tell you to run right out and buy one for yourself – but I don’t know if you could find it. It’s been out of stock everywhere I’ve checked for years. If you have a line on it, do let me know. I’d love another.
However, we totally don’t need to fret, because you can find probably a zillion beautiful roses out there! And if you don’t grow your own, the florist, the grocery store, or a rose-growing friend are all wonderful options.
In any case, the bright, blowsy style of our roses add so much freshness to the table. Especially when it’s a neutral silver and gold table setting like this, I love to put the roses in clear glass or crystal. The vases almost disappear, and leave the roses as the playful center of attention.
Which Candlesticks For The Silver and Gold Table Setting?
Of course being me, I think the candles should match the rest of the setting. And because I made silver the primary color, I chose heavier silver candlesticks, and smaller, lighter gold ones.
Plus the silver ones have those hanging crystals that I love so much! They accentuate the crystal glasses and vases, and add to the lightness and airiness of the whole table.
More Roses For Decoration
Because I had lots of pink roses left over, I put some in another crystal vase. I didn’t really do an “arrangement” with these, either, just put them in by themselves.
I like to add a little decoration to other parts of the room. It ties the whole look together, and gives another beautiful thing to look at during dinner.

So I have never mixed gold and silver! I love it! Maybe it was growing up in the northeast….you know, like don’t wear white shoes before Memorial Day! It is simply elegant. And those roses!
